Post-medieval medal |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete lead object of probable late 16th century date. The image and legend (see below) together suggest that this may be a copy of an official medal commemorating Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the world in 1577. The object consists of approximately two thirds of a sub-circular medal. The upper surface has the raised image of a male bust facing left. He wears a ruff around his neck and a shirt with decorative folds. The facial features are heavily worn but he appears to have a beard and short wavy hair. The legend around the outside is difficult to read but the last part possibly reads "..GOD LED ME +"? On the reverse, there is a vertical cast line and a central ?lug. The object is heavily worn and corroded. It measures 31.9mm diameter by 7.2mm thick and weighs 11.91g. |
