Title |
Post-medieval key (locking) |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy rotary key, probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval periods, c.AD 1200-1500. The bow is lozengiform in plan, with four small circular holes cut into the angles, and two small, damaged knobs on the outer points. The top of the bow has a short, tubular suspension loop. This may have been used with rings, chains or swivels although none survive. Below the bow is a three part collar with two narrow bands either side of a thicker one, extending down from this is the stem which is hollow and octagonal in section. At its base is a large bit with a number of wards and clefts, forming a regular pattern. Described as London type 2. The general condition of the key is good, apart from one small area of active corrosion, it has an even dark green patination over the whole surface.
Length 92.7mm, width 33.5mm, thickness 9.2mm. Weight 47.3g. Cf. <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/880305">WMID-7CE0D1</a>. |
