Title
Post-medieval half of a spectacle buckle
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped shoe buckle frame. It is sub-oval in shape and flat, with a simple, narrowed, central, recessed bar. The frame has rounded ends and trefoil sides and has a flat base and a convex profile in cross-section. The strap bar has an incised line either side of the bar terminus on both sides of the frame. These lines make the frame appear raised between the lines, but this section is flush with the rest of the frame. On similar examples of this buckle type, the bar often has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe, but on this example there is no plate. The buckle is 21 mm long and 28 mm wide, and 2 mm in thickness; the bar within the frame is 15 mm long and 2 mm wide.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates two similar buckles, on page 70, plate number 440 and number 441, which he dates to c. 1600-1720.

Read (1995) illustrates another example on page 143, No. 919, which he dates to 1600-1650.
