Title |
Post-medieval glass bead (profile) |
||
Description |
English: Half of a blue glass bead, ovoid in plan, but slightly tapered at one end, and plano-convex in profile and in section, with the hole for threading also split in half.
This shape and style of bead does not appear in Guido's 1978 corpus on prehistoric and Roman beads, and does not compare to any other examples of blue glass beads from the Iron Age to the post-Roman period. Roman beads are usually more round and the perforation runs vertically through the shortest axis, rather than horizontally through the longest, as in this case. This bead has also been made in a different way, with a droplet of glass dropped down a metal wire and then heated and turned to shape it and ground when cooler to finish it off, hence the very even incised lines, around the circumference of the wider end of the bead, and just inside the edge of the perforation. It appears to be relatively modern, and definitely Post-Medieval in date. |
