Title |
Post-medieval drop handle |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy drop handle or cabinet door pull, oval in plan and circular in section, with a tear-shaped knop above the lug for a hinge, cast as one. The rectangular lug has been sheared off, at both ends, from a longer rod which would have fitted into a hinge, attached to a piece of furniture. The handle would not have been able to rotate, but only move from side to side, which suggests that it was a cabinet door handle rather than a drawer handle, and may have been broken when it was forced.
Margeson (1993) illustrates a similar example on page 81, Fig.46, No.507. Bosomworth (1992) illustrates a similar example attached to an ornate brass coal box on page 208. No.9303, and an umbrella handle on page 283, No.14016, which both date from the Victorian period. |
