Title |
Post-medieval double-looped asymmetrical buckle |
||
Description |
English: A post-medieval cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle, complete with pin and chape. The buckle frame has one rectangular and one D-shaped loop. A simple sheet copper-alloy pin is retained at the pin bar by the chape. The frame features transverse notches at the centre of the outer edges of both loops that would have acted as pin rests. The chape is formed of a single piece of metal folded over on itself, the upper fold narrowed and curved round to form a hooked terminal. The frame is curved in profile, perhaps as a result of wear.
This may be a spur buckle, its chape comparable with those illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 72; refs. 453, 454); the form of the frame is closer to asymmetrical buckles which generally date later (ibid., 91). |
