Title
Post-medieval dividers
Description
English: A complete set of post-medieval copper-alloy dividers. The object has a globular hinged end, formed by fitting the upper part of one arm into a slot in the sub-spherical head of the second. Below this is a narrow ridged collar. The dividers have a measurement below the collar of 5.7mm wide, and a thickness of 4.3mm. The complete length is 65.9mm.

The slot at the top of the outer arm is c. 16mm long, and the inner arm is flattened to fit into the slot. The copper-alloy axis bar can just be seen on either side. The collar runs around both arms. The touching faces of the arms are completely flat; the side faces are very slightly bevelled. The arms of the instrument taper to a pointed tip. There is a maker's mark of a five-pointed star within a circle on the outer face of the inner arm. The hinge has seized up in antiquity, but otherwise the dividers are in good condition. They have a brown patina, perhaps indicative of brass, and weigh 9.5g.

Similar dividers have been recorded on the PAS database at IOW-39A9D3 (also with maker's mark in a similar place, but not the same maker) and BH-731AB4 (rather longer). A date of c. 1700-c. 1900 is often suggested, and seems reasonable.
