Title
Post-medieval coin: Chinese Xianfeng period coin
Description
English: A complete copper alloy Chinese Xianfeng period coin of late post-medieval date. The coin was issued by Emperor Xianfeng Emperor (also known as Wenzong) who ruled between AD 1851-1861. The coin has the characteristic square hole in its centre. The obverse has four Chinese characters arranged around the hole, read top (1), bottom (2), right (3), left (4). This inscription therefore reads (1) Xian (2) feng (3) tong (4)bao (Xianfeng tongbao) and translates as 'Circulating treasure
of Xianfeng. The reverse of the coin features the mint name in Manchu script, read right to left; Yuwan boo ('Board of Works Beijing, treasure').
