Title |
Post-medieval chisel |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy chisel tool of uncertain date, possibly post-medieval (c. AD 1500-1900). In section the shaft is an irregular chamfered rectangle, there are shallow grooves running along the flat surfaces and the butt end is flattened and burred from striking. The shaft flares out to the cutting edge which is triangular in profile, with a straight edge dented in the middle, possibly from contact with an iron nail. Given the relatively soft metal, it is possible this tool was for splitting wood rather than carving.
Length 76.4 mm, width of shaft 10.4 mm, width at cutting edge 17.6 mm , thickness 10.3 mm, weight 46.6 g |
