Title |
Post-medieval broken spectacle buckle (plan) |
||
Description |
English: Broken cast copper alloy double-loop or spectacle oval buckle frame which has a flat base and a convex profile. One of the loops of the frame has been sheared off at the edge of the mouldings on either side of the strap bar. The strap bar is narrowed and triangular in section and the pin is missing. There is a moulded trefoil knop with three deep internal grooves, which resembles an scallop shell, on the outer edge of the loop that survives. The sides of the frame are concave and also have a moulded trefoil knop at either end of the strap bar.
The remaining loop is 31 mm in length and 30 mm in width and 2 mm in thickness. The strap bar is 13 mm in length and 2.2 mm in thickness. The broken frame weighs 5.61g. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on p.65, No.397, which is dated to c.1550-1650. |
