Post-medieval asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: A distorted cast asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, with a highly elaborate outer edge protrusion, while the other is rectangular. The latter features a large, protruding knop on its outer corners, each with a ridged collar within. There is a further double collared knop at each end of the pin bar. This latter has orange corrosion product towards one end suggesting that the pin was made of iron. On the inner surface of the outer edge is a triangular notch, again bearing traces of corrosion product, which would have acted as a pin rest. The openwork protrusion on the outer edge consists of a pair of conjoined annulets, above which crescents that meet creating a lozengiform hole between them and the annulets. Beyond these is a rounded knop extending from a transversely grooved collar. The edges are externally bevelled on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The object has been bent both upwards and downwards in places as a result of heavy old strikes. The artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour with patches of light-green corrosion product. A similar example, albeit less developed, can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 93; ref. 593). |
