Title |
Post-medieval asymmetrical buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: A corroded cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, while the other is rectangular. The outer edge of the rectangular loop appears to have a moulding at each corner and a double moulding at its centre, although these have been highly worn. It is possible this continued around the edge of the rectangular loop but is now obscured by the high degree of wear. The D-shaped loop has two small linear indentations in the centre of its outer edge, delineating a pin rest. The lower surface of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The edges of the upper surface are bevelled internally and externally, both steeply. The buckle has corroded to a variable green/brown colour, with a very small area of possible red-brown corrosion on the pin bar suggesting that the pin was of iron. One of the loops has been bent upwards at an angle compared to the other although whether this was as a result of old damage or through wear it is not certain. Similar asymmetrical buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 91-92). |
