Title |
Post-medieval asymmetrical buckle |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy double-loop asymmetrical spur or shoe buckle frame. The frame has a flat base and a convex profile in cross-section. The shape of the frame is sub-rectangular and it has a simple, central, narrowed strap bar, slightly recessed from the frame. The rounded end of the frame has a widened pointed inner edge where the pin would have rested, but no transverse groove. There are pairs of transverse grooves on the surface of the frame, on either side of the pin bar. Part of iron pin is missing, which has corroded into a lump of accretion on the pin bar.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar examples on pages 90-91, Nos.562 & 568, which is dated to c.1575-1700. Read (1988) illustrates another similar example on page 141, No.890, which is dated to c.1600-1700. |
