Title |
Post-medieval S-shaped strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: A complete but damaged copper-alloy S-shaped belt hook fastener of post-medieval/modern date. Each end of the fastener terminates in a moulded swan's head, represented bifacially. These have beak, eyes and feathers all delineated. The object then narrows from each head before expanding again towards the centre of the body of the animal. At the centre is a band flanked on both sides and on both faces by foliate devices with central stems. One of the ends of the object has been bent outwards and also sideways slightly. The object has a red-brown colouring with some lighter areas of corrosion product. A wide post-medieval date range has been offered for this artefact; perhaps a later date within this range is more plausible given the intricacy of the decoration. See reference HAMP-46DEB6 for a similar object which has suffered similar damage. |
