Title
Post-medieval S-shaped belt-fastener (incomplete)
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy S-shaped belt fastener of 16th to 17th century date (see Geake, 2001, p. 37).

The fastener would originally have been symmetrical in form, comprising the heads and necks of two serpent-like creatures. The bases of the two necks are separated from each other by a transverse band of two low ridges with a central gap in between. The neck of the intact creature bears traces of scales or feathers. On the head is a beak-like nose and, on each side of the head, a vessica-shaped eye. The central band holds what appears to be a sheath of corn, set at a right-angle.

The object measures 38.4mm long, 18.3mm wide and 6.6mm thick. The weight is 16.25g.
