Title
Post-medieval : Toy
Description
English: An incomplete hollow-cast lead toy of late post-medieval to modern date. The toy is in the form of a horse with mounted rider though the riders' upper body, the horses head and the rear of the horse are now missing.

The riders legs with mid thigh length boots are visible to either side of the horses body with saddle and stirrups also present. A rapier-like sword hangs behind the left leg of the rider and a holster with musket is present behind the right leg. The reigns are looped around the neck of the horse rising upward to where they would presumably be held in the hands of the rider. The horses' mane is also present along the back of the neck. The two remaining front legs of the horse are stretched up and outward suggesting a running pose. This toy most probably represents a cavalry soldier.

The belly of the horse bear text reading "COPYRIGHT Wm BRITA[--]" suggesting a more modern date for this object.

Britains is a toy company known for its diecast lead soldiers. The company was founded by William Britain Jr who in 1893 invented the process of hollow casting in lead, and revolutionized the production of toy soldiers.

The metal has a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The toy is 32.4mm long, 36.3mm wide, 10.8mm thick; the walls are 1.4mm thick and weighs 23.9g.
