Title |
Post-medieval : Coin Weight |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper-alloy coin weight of medieval date. The coin weight is circular in plan and bi-faced being stamped on both sides with "S // 36". Therefore this weigh was used to measure the Portuguese 4 escudos, known in England as the Johannes or Joe. In the late 18th century it became common practice for British makers to produce coin weights to measure these common denominations of Portuguese coins. The coin weight is 23.1mm in diameter, 4.4mm thick and weighs 12.8g. Reference: Wither, Lions, Ships and Angels, p.53 - 55. |
