Title
Post-Medieval tobacco jar handle
Description
English: A cast lead alloy figurine or handle dating from the Post-Medieval to the Modern period. The head is three dimensional and hollow. It appears to be in the form of a human male of African ethnicity. It has a rounded face with a wide flattened nose and thick lips, a short 'bowl-cut' hairstyle and worn flat ears. At the base of the rear of the head is a rectangular hole where the object would have been attached with a rectangular shank.

Similar examples which have been recorded on the database all have integral shanks projecting from the base of head forming a 'neck' a parallel for a hollow head with rectangular slot has not been found. The object has a dark grey patina and traces of silvering can be seen on the crown of the head.

Lead boxes, with ornamental lids were used during the Late 17th to 18th Centuries to keep moist tobacco inside. It is likely that this form of tobacco jar is popular into the late 18th century. Several others from Shropshire and Staffordshire have been recorded on the PAS database (LIN-C8BAB3, DENO-09F0E8, WILT-542C21, DENO-40DCB5, and DENO-56F3B7).
