Title
Post-Medieval strap fitting
Description
English: A possibly incomplete copper alloy Post-Medieval strap fitting depicting an erotic scene. It measures 30.30x9.01x3.88mm and weighs 2.19g.

The copper alloy plate is roughly rectangular in shape with a loop at one end (7.45mm wide, 3.06mm diameter internal) and a pierced circular projection at the other (still containing an iron rivet 3.88mm in length and c.2mm in diameter). Below a transversely-grooved collar a female (left) and male (right) embrace, their arms connecting and their legs bending forwards. To the reverse is a break below the loop, suggesting a possible original backplate, now missing.

Stuart Campbell, National Museum of Scotland, comments: "Fascinating, I have never seen one of these before; the iron rivet makes me think perhaps a furniture fitting. Generally speaking the majority of the erotic finds I have seen reproduce a small number of scenes which appear to be copied from (or at least reference) print culture. This one doesn't correspond to any of these and is very public, in the sense that the other objects (i.e. pipe tampers) were designed to be used in specific contexts or settings" (pers.comm. August 2013).
