Title
Post-Medieval pipe tamper
Description
English: A Post-Medieval (1700-1900) copper alloy erotic form of pipe tamper for a clay tobacco pipe, depicting a couple in the act of fornication below a tree branch, the trunk of the tree to one side. The male stands with both legs on the ground while holding one of the female's legs horizontally, whileshe stands on the other. The decoration is moulded on one side only - the reverse is flat with a slight hollowing behind the figures. Below extends a double reel and bead moulding, forming the shaft and tamping end.

Shaft measures 23.72x11.12mm (tamping end 11.12mm diameter), decorative plate measures 43.38x30.47x4.47mm. Object measures 66.90x30.47x11.12mm and weighs 30.55g.

Pipe tampers were used to flatten down tobacco in a pipe in order to ensure that it burnt evenly and drew properly. Erotic scenes were particularly popular as decoration on them in the 18th century.
