Title
Post-Medieval halfpenny Token (depicting Newgate Prison)
Description
English: An almost complete post-Medieval copper-alloy halfpenny token dating to AD 1794 (Dalton and Hamer: 1977, 140-1, nos. 391-3).

Obverse: 'NEWGATE' (top), MDCCXCIV' (bottom); Newgate Prison

Reverse: PAYABLE/AT/THE RESIDENCE/OF MESSRS SYMONDS/WINTERBOTHAM/RIDGWAY/&/HOLT

Diameter: 28.6mm. Weight: 7.38g. DA=12:12.

The token is a satirical piece: Symonds, Winterbottom, Ridgway and Holt were at the time prisoners in Newgate prison on treason charges. Two of the men named, Henry Symonds and James Ridgway, had been imprisoned for publishing Paine's book 'The rights of man'.

The token engraved by Thomas Wyon and manufactured by Peter Kempson in the name of Henry Symonds, William Winterbotham, James Ridgway and David Holt
