Title
Post-Medieval Whorl or Flywheel
Description
English: Lead and iron flywheel. Cast plano-convex whorl of lead with an iron pin of shaft diameter 8.8mm passing into its flat side, and spread or expanded to a diameter of 13.3mm on the convex side of the whorl. The lead is densely patinated and the iron corroded. The flywheel is mentioned by the author Theophilus in the early 12th century as assisting the operation of various devices and the principle of its use also informs the working of the potter's wheel. This reporter cannot, however, suggest what use this example may have enjoyed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.

Diameter (whorl): 31.1mm, Thickness (whorl): 7.6mm, Height (overall): 15.6mm, Weight: 45.75gms
