Title |
Post-Medieval Seal-top Spoon |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete and bent post-Medieval copper-alloy spoon (c. 1550-c. 1650).
This fragment is the knop and part of the stem/handle. The bowl is missing. The knop is of the seal top type with a flat top (13.0mm in diameter). It has no evidence of pricked owner's initials or other marks. Below the top a baluster moulding is made up of a constriction, then a baluster, a collar, another baluster, then a collar. The stem is rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. The spoon is reddish brown and the patina is lost. Length if straightened: 71.5mm; width of stem 5.0mm; thickness of stem: 2.6mm. Weight: 11.89g. Similar examples are illustrated by Homer (1975:38) who categorises them as Seal Top types C and F, fluted or scrolled baluster seals, depending on their decoration which is worn on this example. He dates both types to the mid-16th to mid-17th centuries. Homer, R. F., 1975. Five centuries of base metal spoons London: The Worshipful Company of Pewterers. |
