Title
Post-Medieval S-Shaped Strap Fitting
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy ‘S’-shaped belt fastener of post-Medieval date (c. 1600-c. 1800).

The fastener is in the form of two bifacial swan head terminals that curve to form two loops. Each head has a beak and eyes and other features may have existed but are not present due to wear. The object narrows from each head before expanding again towards the centre of the body of the animal. At the centre is a band flanked on both sides and on both faces by foliate elements. One of the loops encloses a penannular ring, circular in cross-section with an outer diameter of 14.0mm.

The surfaces of both elements are coloured reddish brown and small flecks of a dark green patina are visible on both.

40.3 x 18.9 x 5.4mm. Weight: 17.84g.

It is possible that the object may be slightly earlier or later than the date suggested.

S-shaped ‘snake belt’ fasteners were probably associated with sword belts and parallels can be seen in Bailey’s (1997) Detector Finds 3, 21-22. They are widely considered to date from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Geake, 2001).
