Title
Post-Medieval S-Shaped Strap Fitting
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy S-shaped belt hook or strap fitting of Post-Medieval, sixteenth or seventeenth century date (AD 1500 - AD 1700). Length: 31.1mm; width: 20.7mm and 6.0mm thick. Weight: 10.02g.

The object is S-shaped in order to form two hooks which have almost identical terminals. Each terminal is in the form of a beast's head with a gaping mouth. The head is possibly intended to be that of a dragon. The central part of the fitting, the shared 'gorged' neck of the two heads, has moulded decoration. This decoration is in the form of a collar of four large pellets, one at each side and one on each edge. These features are flanked on either side by leaf-like motifs. The maximum width of the neck, close to the central moulding, is 6.2mm. It tapers towards each head to a minimum width of about 4.4mm. The end of one of the terminals (the beast's mouth) makes contact with the central collar to form an enclosed hook within which is a deposit of corroded iron.

Although this piece is in a stable condition it is corroded in places and is largely covered in a dark green patina. Where the patina is absent the underlying colour of the metal is pinkish red.

Other similar strap fittings are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds from Mansfield Parish, Nottinghamshire (DENO-CBA1A6); Thwing Parish, East Riding of Yorkshire (NCL-BD1CE5); Hockliffe Parish, Bedfordshire (BH-7D9394); Rodmell Parish, East Sussex (SUSS-4DD1F5); Ringmer Parish, East Sussex (SUSS-AEFC65); Warkworth Parish, Northumberland (NCL-A53928) and Great Milton Parish, Oxfordshire (BERK-273A65).
