Title |
Post-Medieval Incomplete Silver Bodkin |
||
Description |
English: Silver dress pin of bodkin type, incomplete. The body of the bodkin has a sub rectangular section with bevelled edges. One terminal of the bodkin has a circular bowl and the circular shape that this sits in tapers to a point, where it meets the connecting segment of the piece, a triangular panel. A further two small triangular panels, with etched decoration, are positioned perpendicular to the length of the bodkin, and join it on either side of this junction. The larger triangular panel has a circular perforation and has etched lines following the edges. Following this is a short rectangular panel, a collar and a further short rectangular panel. In the first panel is a decoration consisting of a flower on a stem and grass, the grass growing from the collar side. After the collar the panel has a design of a star/ flower made using many etched lines emanating from a circular indentation. An additional element may have been fixed/ inserted into this, but is now missing. The decoration on all these panels in repeated on the reverse. Following this is a long rectangular panel with a longitudinal opening and around this is an incised hexagonal border, of which one point crosses over onto the panel with the star/ flower design. This design is not repeated on the reverse. The last panel is broken but it is possible to see there was a circular perforation with etched lines emanating from the perforation and this is repeated on the reverse. |
