Title |
Post-Medieval Head-dress Pin |
||
Description |
English: A decorated silver head-dress pin with a scooped terminal. Below the terminal are two circular knops above a pierced circular hole. A ridge separates the hole from a rectangular panel with incised geometric and zig-zag patterns filled in with floral decoration (on both sides of the pin). Below this is a longitudinal opening, separating this panel from another with similar decoration. At the end of the decorated field are etched the initials B.S. The pin is rectangular in section and tapers to a point. The pin is worn and bent in several places along its length. The scooped terminal is 5.41mm in diameter and 1.97mm deep. The circular hole is 2.14mm diameter and the longitudinal opening 11.28mm long and 1.45mm wide. The width tapers to 1.53mm. This type of headdress pin (sometimes referred to as a bodkin) dates to the seventeenth century. A similar example is in the collections of Norfolk Museums (Margeson 1993, 9, Plate III). |
