Post-Medieval Commemorative Medal fragment |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy medal fragment. A stamped trapezoid plate, here considered likely to be one arm from an object in the shape of a Greek or Maltese Cross with a central roundel, the pattern adopted for a range of military medals from the mid-19th century onwards, most famously the Victoria Cross. The date1837 appears framed by a floral swag studded by rose blooms, and above the curving edge of the roundel. Stamped lettering from three lines of a legend appear on the back: REID / OF / H[?ULL]. As 1837 was the Coronation year of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), this is probably from a commemorative medal. Its position as illustrated is suggested by the orientation of its reverse legend; the uppermost date would probably have been the birth of the Queen, and the next the date of her marriage. The most likely occasion for its issue is the Golden Jubilee celebrating the fiftieth year of the reign in 1887. A number of private and corporate bodies issued their own mementos in celebration of the event. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1887.
