Title
Post-Medieval Button (cloak fastener)
Description
English: An almost complete and worn post-Medieval copper-alloy button or cloak fastener (c. 1650-c. 1700).

The button, possibly a cloak fastener, is domed at the front and concave at the rear where there is a central integral drilled shank. This drilled hole is 2.92mm in diameter. The design at the front consists of a tressure of six arches formed of punched annulets (some of the punch marks are semicircular). Within this feature is an engraved star of six points with an engraved crescent in each angle. Between each tressure and crescent there are further annulets. There may have been a design at the centre of the star. However, none is now visible. The whole design is that of a stylised flower.

This button is very worn at the front. It is green with patches of a darker matt green patina. There is no trace of any surface treatment. A small amount of material has been lost around the edges.

Diameter: 26.24mm; thickness: 4.73mm; overall thickness: 9.21mm. Weight: 7.13g.

Similar one-piece buttons, some with flower type designs, have been published (Read 2005: 39-48).

Similar buttons have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. See finds: IOW-53E5F5; IOW-DE8497; KENT-EF5873; LON-6DE2D8; NLM-EC1E37; NMS-8837D4; PUBLIC-75D94; SUR-20C2E7; SUR-C765B4 and SWYOR-BCA255.
