Title
Post-Medieval Asymmetrical Double Looped Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy asymmetrical double looped buckle of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1575 – c. AD 1700). Length: 28.0mm; width: 20.9mm and 6.1mm thick. Weight: 3.76g.

One loop is missing due to two old and abraded breaks.

In plan, the surviving loop is D-shaped (almost oval). The upper face is largely convex. However, the top is flat. The whole of the underside is flat. A small projection at the centre of the outside edge in the form of a knop is sub-lozenge shaped. It is flat on the top and also on the underside. The bar is slightly narrowed and extends beyond the frame at each end. It is convex at the front and flat on the underside. The copper alloy pin is 19.1mm in length and has a maximum width (at the loop) of 4.2mm. It is made from a strip of copper alloy which is convex at the front and flat at the rear. The pin tapers from the loop towards the blunt tip.

This buckle is corroded and in poor condition. The patina is lost although traces of tinning are present on the frame.

Similar buckles are illustrated by Whitehead. These illustrated buckles have been dated c. 1575 – c. 1700 (Whitehead 1996, 92, refs. 582-584).
