Description
English: A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy circular weight, possibly for an apothecary (c. 1890).

This weight is circular in plan with flaring sides and has a raised bevelled rim. At the front it is stamped '8 DRAMS' with a verification mark at 5 o' clock: crowned V R with 520 below. The base is slightly concave and has a stamped figure '8'.

This weight is reddish brown overall.

Upper diameter: 21.9mm; lower diameter: 19.2mm; thickness: 6.4mm. Weight: 13.56g. (0.4780 ounces).

This weight was issued about 1890 when the Isle of Wight became a separate administrative unit. Probably of William Alfred Osland or Frederick Osland of 77, Upper St James Street, Newport, Isle of Wight.
