Possibly a Medieval copper alloy barb-spring barrel padlock fragment |

Description |
English: Possibly a Medieval copper alloy barb-spring barrel padlock fragment. It is 'L' shaped in section with the inside of the L being undecorated and curved. It is sub 'n' shaped in plan on the incised decorated section of the outer face with a small domed projection at the bottom of the wider leg of the n. The undecorated section of the outer face is shaped like an 'L' rotated 45 degrees right. It has a small domed projection at the bottom of the shorter arm. The decorated facet has three distinct areas and an incised horizontal line running across the top of the n. Above this line and over the gap between the legs is an area bounded by two short vertical lines are four short right sloping diagonals, forming a basic hatching. In the wider leg the rouletted decoration takes the form of two roughly parallel inwardly toothed horizontal lines. Above and right is a beaded semi-circle. In the thinner arm is a partial trefoil decoration with only the central leaf or petal complete. The presence of the hatched area, and the interruption of the rest of the decoration, suggests that the area between has been deliberately removed at a later date. The domed projections are quite crude and could also relate to this proposed reuse. Possibly dating to between c1200 and c1500 AD, but it could be pre-Conquest or Post Medieval if it isn't a lock fragment.
The length is 22mm, width is 16mm, thickness 11mm, and weight 3.92g. See also NCL-BCC144 and LVPL-053635. |
