Title |
Possible vessel foot of unknown date |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy foot from a larger object, possibly a vessel or box. The foot is in the form of a paw with five toes, three large toes in the centre and a smaller one on each side. The base of the foot is flat. The ankle is narrow and then flares to a flat top with a broken edge. The top seems to be oval but the broken edge has a concave notch in it, suggesting that there may have been a circular (rivet?) hole. On the flat top above the ankle is a tang or pin that points upwards. It is presumed that this was the fixing to the larger object. The tang is sub-square in section. The foot is 26.2mm long, 22.4mm wide and 13.4mm thick. The tang is 11.5mm long. The foot looks like it may be intended to represent a lion’s paw. It is very difficult to date since the decorative motif of a lion has been used from Roman times to the present day. Other similar vessel feet recorded on the database include HAMP-107CF4 and BH-9D4386, which have been attributed to the Roman and Medieval periods. |
