Description |
English: Late Iron Age copper alloy terret fragment probably of 1st century AD date The terret is fragmentary, represented by the top of the hoop and integral decoration at the apex only (with a Surviving height of 37mm, a maximum surviving width of 37.4mm and a weight of 10.4g). The hoop is of D-shaped to oval section (with a width of 4.0mm and a thickness of 3.4mm and suggested hoop diameter of approximately 35mm). The hoop is surmounted by a decorative moulding comprising two opposing concave arcs terminating in rounded knops and leaving an open triangle at the centre. The arms are of triangular section with a consistent width. The central knop is larger (with a diameter of 9.0mm) and is enhanced with an incised grove around the side of the knop and over the upper surface is an incised concave-sided triangle. The two side knops are smaller and are now without any applied decoration. The surface is worn and has a pale to mid-green patina. The terret fragment can now be seen to be part of an emerging small but significant group with very similar decoration. The group may be centred on the Vale of Glamorgan with this representing the third example within 17 kilometres of each other. The group may be seen as having a western outlier in Swansea and a northern example from Powys . The Swansea example is of strap-mounted type and of Roman date, suggesting some longevity to the decorative style within the region. |
