Title |
Possible Mesolithic tranchet axe |
||
Description |
English: A struck flint implement, possibly a tranchet axe of Mesolithic date. It is struck from a dark brown flint,is sub-oval in form and sub-triangular in section with a prominent ridge along the dorsal face. The proximal(?) end has bifacial flake removal and limited semi-abrupt and scaled retouch. At the distal end the dorsal face retains a large area of cortex and narrows almost to a cutting edge. On the ventral face, behind the area of cortex, the distal end has short, semi-abrupt and scaled retouch, as does one edge of the distal end. The entire object measures 88.95mm in length, 38.19mm in width, 22.17mm in thickness, and 69.44g in weight.
The precise function of this object remains unclear. The proximal end appears characteristic of a bifacially worked axe, perhaps a tranchet axe, however the distal end is unusual in retaining cortex and having relatively extensive retouch. Potentially, this may be a failed attempt at creating an axe or similar implement, or alternatively an axe that has had re-use at a later date but with differing function. In either case it is likely to date to the Mesolithic period, if not slightly later into the Neolithic period, c.10,000-4000 BC. |
