Title |
Possible Early Medieval or Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy penannular loop which is probably a broken buckle or possibly a very unusual finger ring. The ring has sub-lozenge shaped thick terminals but the loop is thin and angled. It flares from the terminals to 9.8mm wide in the middle. The outer surface of the loop is pitted, though the inner surface is in better condition. The patina has been recently destroyed. There is a projection from one terminal knop which could be the remains of a bar to which the pin would have been attached if the object was a buckle. There is no evidence for a pin rest. No decoration survives, if there ever was any, making the object very difficult to date. If it is a buckle it is most likely to date from the eleventh or twelth centuries. The loop is 20.6mm long, 17.5mm wide and 9.8mm thick. |
