Title
Possible Anglo-saxon buckle
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a buckle plate/tongue of Early-Medieval. It comprises a rectangular plate that is missing its attachment end due to old breaks and has semi-circular notches to either side of the terminal end giving it a stepped appearance. The back face is concave while the front face has extensive gilding and two evenly spaced circular rivet holes at the terminal end. On the back face of the terminal end is what appears to be an incomplete projecting terminal hook, rivet or similar objet, which is oval shaped in section but its precise form is uncertain due to corrosion and encrustation. The entire object measures 17.89mm in length, 12.20mm in width, 3.84mm in thickness, and weighs 1.78g.

The precise form of this object remains uncertain. The closest parallels identified in terms of form are the decorative tongue shields from buckles of Anglo-Saxon date (e.g. Marzinzik, 2003: pp. 308, 408-409, pls. 86-87). It is possible that the current example served a similar function as one component of a buckle frame & plate, although a differing use, and possibly a later date range cannot be ruled out entirely. If it is a buckle tongue it is likely to date to between the 6th and 7th centuries AD, although a later date range cannot be discounted.
