Portrait of a magistrate at the Parliament of Paris (by Nicolas de Largillierre)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Nicolas de Largillierre (Paris 1656 - 1746)

Portrait of a magistrate at the Parliament of Paris

Oil on canvas

81,6 x 64,7 cm; 32⅛ by 25½ in.

Although he was born in Paris in 1656, Nicolas de Largillierre was brought up and trained in Antwerp before moving to London to work under the direction of Sir Peter Lely. Largillierre returned to Paris in 1682 and became one of the most important and sought-after portrait painters in Paris. He entered the Académie Royale in 1686 and became its director in 1738. Preferring to work with private patrons, unlike his peers who sought commissions for official portraits from the court, he rapidly developed a solid reputation as a portrait painter for the wealthy Parisian bourgeoisie, to which the model for the present painting certainly belonged.

This fine portrait is typical of Largillierre’s work and his talent. It is a perfect example of the artist’s dexterity: his subtle rendering of the fine detail of textiles, hair and complexion is matched by the psychological depth preserved in his portrayal of the model.

According to family tradition, the painting was bought by Alexandre Roslin at the sale after the artist’s death. Although the model for the painting is unknown – though he was probably a magistrate on the bench at the Parlement de Paris – it is notable that a great portrait painter of the generation that came after him should have wanted to own this painting, so that he could admire and learn from the style of his predecessor.

81,6 x 64,7 cm ; 32⅛ by 25½ in.
