Portrait of a fifteen-year-old boy, half-length, from the Van der Wiele family

The coat of arms on this portrait relates to the Van de Wiele (or Wielen) family, the most famous member of which was the catholic theologian and poet Johannes Stalpart van der Wielen (1546–1625). It appears that Anthonie van Ravesteyn of the Hague, brother to the more widely known Jan van Ravesteyn (1572–1657), was the portrait painter of choice for the family. Johannes's portrait by Anthonie, containing the same coat of arms found here, was last recorded in the Haags Historisch Museum, The Hague. Two other portraits of family members dating to 1627, perhaps brothers of the current sitter, are known. The first, presumably the eldest of the trio, is in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen. The second, lacking the family's coat of arms but undoubtedly showing a relation, was sold at auction in 2012. The identical dating, and similar costumes, suggests that the portraits were conceived as a group.
