Louis Franҫois Gérard van der Puyl Dutch ( active France, England, Utrecht, and Amsterdam 1750 - 1824 Portrait of Thomas Payne with His Family and Friends , 1787 The seated gentleman wearing spectacles in the center of the painting is Thomas Payne, a famous London bookseller and publisher whose shop in Mewsgate, London, was a gathering place for intellectuals and literary figures. This view of the shop shows family members and friends socializing and playing Whist, a popular eighteenth-century card game.
