Description
A portrait photograph of Thomas Bond Hawson of Lake Wangary, thought to be the first man to jump ashore in South Australia on Landing Day in 1839. T. B. Hawson, was born at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada on December 29, 1821. On 17 Oct 1837 Hawson arrived in South Australia from London (Source: Family History South Australia). The country to the north of Lake Wangary, including the shore, was the freehold property of Mr. T. B. Hawson, who was also landlord of the local hotel. He also possessed leasehold lands, between the ranges and the coast, which included about 3,000 Merino sheep. Thomas Bond Hawson passed away in 1907 at Lake Wangary, Port Lincoln District, South Australia
