Osceola - The Great Seminole Chief, 1838, Oil on canvas, painting by Robert John Curtis (1816-1877), Dallas Museum of Art, The Karl and Esther Hoblitzelle Collection, gift of the Hoblitzelle Foundation, OBJECT NUMBER: 1987.51. Art Inventories Catalog, Smithsonian American Art Museums, Control number: IAP 50570151. Note: Three silver gorgets hang around Chief Osceola neck and he wears a floral pattern headband that holds one white and two black feathers. The artist, Robert John Curtis, was sent to Fort Moultrie where Osceola was imprisoned specifically to paint his portrait in 1838. Several copies have been painted from the original over the years. |
