Portrait of Nicholas Kratzer |

Description |
This engraving portrays Nicholas Kratzer (1487?-1550), a German mathematician, astronomer, and horologist (horology is the art or science of measuring time), surrounded with tools related to his professional interests. Kratzer spent much of his professional life in England, where he was appointed as astronomer to King Henry VIII. This engraving was based on a drawing by Auguste Paul Charles Anastasi (1820-1889), which was in turn after a much earlier painting by Hans Holbein (circa 1497-1543). |
