for new sittings. It is so easy for all of us to liveso fully in the past that we neglect the opportunities of thepresent, and fail to lay the foundation for the hope of thefuture. I wonder often why more photographers do not make useof seasonable displays. I am not writing of the exclusivestudio for few will ever own or manage one, but of theordinary studio, the studio of the town or small city wherethe majority of the people may go and each find somethingsuited to his purse and needs. Change may be the law ofnature, but deadly monotony seems to be the law of too manyphotographers showcases. In contrast, I remember well this incident. A prominentChautauqua platform director was to fill a return engagementin a town of fifteen thousand people. The place was smallenough (hat I could see it caused considerable comment whenone photographer showed a splendid enlargement of thisfavorite speaker on the opening day of the Chautauqua. Iwas not surprised to find that the photographer had won 76

By glancing at the window of any prosperous departmentstore of today, even Rip Van Winkle could tell the season ofthe year. What matter though he has not seen a calendar fortwenty years ? Experts in window trimming have been paidto keep the spirit of the day in the beauty and skill of decora-tion that all who walk or ride, and even he who speeds by, mayread. How many photographers might well regret to remem-ber that for many years there has been no distinction betweentheir Christmas and Easter windows, except in the rathersmall matter of change of portraits? A good sample case is the best and cheapest of advertising.Then there is a personal growth and pride in getting from thebeaten track in doing ones best in an original way, eventhough the result is not new.
