Portrait of Mrs Bryan Barrett (1759–1834) (by Philip Jean)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Philip Jean (Saint-Ouen (Jersey) 1755 - 1802 Hempstead)

Portrait of Mrs Bryan Barrett (1759–1834), three-quarter-length, seated, wearing a white dress with a black sash and a yellow leather glove, holding a straw hat

oil on canvas

126.7 cm. x 102 cm.; 49⅞ x 40¼ in.

Philip Jean was a miniature painter who started his career in the navy serving under Admiral Lord Rodney. Chiefly known for his miniatures, he also worked in oils. He frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1787 to 1803 and was patronized by the duke of Gloucester. While settled in London, he also painted portraits of members of the British Royal family, including full-lengths of George III and Queen Charlotte.

Reverend Jonathan Tyers Barrett once lived in Brandon House, which then became the property of Lt. Col. Boyd C.P. Hamilton, who later sold the house and its contents in 1919. The present portrait was included in that sale and according to a local newspaper cutting, it made the highest sale price of the day.
