Further information : This is an oil painting by James Green (1771 - 1834) of the M.P. John Arthur Roebuck (1801-1879).

Roebuck was born in India and educated in Canada. Law was his profession and he served as M.P. for Bath from 1832-37 and from 1841-47. He later represented Sheffield at Parliament. Alongside his political career he wrote many pamphlets and books on political reform.

James Green was a miniature painter who exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy. Later in life he turned his talents to larger scale commissions - this portrait was painted two years before he died.

The painting was adopted by Susan Moore from Bristol. Susan came to look at the range of pictures in need of restoration though the Adopt a Picture scheme and chose this picture. She wanted to restore this previously very dirty, but well painted portrait of a handsome man and historical figure so that visitors to the Gallery could view it again.

The portrait was bought for the Gallery in 1914.
