Portrait of Jane Bertie, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Ancaster (d. 1793), full-length, wearing a white silk dress, standing in a landscape and holding a kitten oil on canvas 127.4 x 101.9 cm.; 50⅛ x 40⅛ in. Jane Bertie married General Edward Mathew (1729–1805). Their daughter, Anne, married James Austen, brother of the novelist Jane Austen, in circa 1792, and Anne's father is said to have served as inspiration for the character of General Tilney in Northanger Abbey. |
