ania University he wrote a drama, entitledCatalina, which was rejected by the theatres andpublishers, and was printed at last at the expenseof a friend, the total sales being but thirty copies.The same year he entered Christiania Universityand began writing for the daily and other peri-odicals, and he closed the year by obtaining thepresentation of a one-act play, Kjaempehofen, at theChristiania Theatre. At this period Ibsen was aRadical and a pronounced Socialist, a contributorto the famous Michael Thranes paper, and one ofa party of students who made an organized pro-test against the expulsion of another leading agi-tator from the country. Ibsen narrowly escapedimprisonment with Thrane when the latter wasarrested and his paper suppressed. Ibsen alsoafterward joined two other young Radicals infounding the weekly, Andhrimner. No doubt the poets remarkabledramatic handling is largely due to his having ac-cepted this proposal and thus having long studiedthe drama from the stand-point of the actual pres-entation. His first drama at Bergen, Sancthatisnat,was not successful and was not published. Thenext, Fru Inger til Ostraat, a play based upon thatperiod of Norways history when her ancientKings were making their last stand against thetriumphant Danish invaders, was well receivedand is still considered one of his best actingdramas. It is especially noteworthy as furnishinga female tragic part only comparable in moderntragedies to that of Lady Macbeth.
