Artist: Caroline Ormes Ransom Medium: Oil on canvas Date: 1863 Location: Memorial Library Landing, James A. Garfield National Historic Site Caroline Ormes Ransom was a good friend of James and Lucretia Garfield (they called her Carrie) and among the first successful American female portrait artists, due in part to the Garfield's patronage. Ransom opened a Cleveland studio in 1861, after studying in New York and Europe. She later opened a studio in Washington DC. Some of her work was placed in the Capitol building.
