Dudley North (1707-1764) who lived at Glemham Hall, Suffolk, was the son of Dudley North (1684-1729); who was Member of Parliament for Suffolk, and later in 1722 for the borough of Oxford, and his wife Catherine, daughter of Elihu Yale, founder of Yale University. His great-grandfather was Dudley, 4th Baron North, K.B., and his great uncle Francis was created 1st Baron Guildford. The sitter married Barbara, daughter of Thomas Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.

PROVENANCE

By descent in the family of the sitter to the 9th Earl of Guilford, Waldershare Park, Dover; Christie's, London, 21 November 1980, lot 91.
